3 diseases &Minamata Minamata disease sometimes referred to as chisso-Minamata is a syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning. Symptoms include ataxia, numbness in the hands and feet, general muscle weakness, narrowing of the fields of vision and damage to hearing and speech. In extreme cases, insanity, paralysis, coma and death follow within the next weeks of the onset of symptoms. Minamata disease was first discovered in Minamata city in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan, in 1956. It was caused by the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from the Chisso Coroporation’s chemical factory, which continued from 1932 to 1968. This highly toxic chemical bioaccumlated in shellfish and fish in Minamata Bay and the Shiranui Sea, which was eaten by the local populace, resulted in mercury poisoning. While cat, dog, pig and human deaths continued over more than 30 years, the government and company did little to prevent the pollution. Minamata is an Eviromental Diseases becuase it is caused by mercuary poisoning in the sea where the fish are that people eat.

Case study-anthrax disease
Anthrax is an acute disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis.nthrax is an acute disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Most forms of the disease are lethal, and it affects both humans and other animals.Until the twentieth century, anthrax infections killed hundreds of thousands of animals and people each year in Australia, Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe, particularly in the concentration camps during WWII.French scientist Louis Pasteur developed the first effective vaccine for anthrax in 1881.
symptoms
The average incubation period for anthrax is up to 7 days, but it can take 60 days or longer for symptoms to develop.1 Symptoms depend on how the infection was acquired.
Cutaneous anthrax usually occurs when spores from the bacteria enter a cut or scrape on the skin. Cutaneous anthrax infection has the following characteristics:
Skin infection begins as a small, raised bump that might itch-similar to an insect or spider bite.
Within 1 to 2 days, the bump develops into a fluid-filled blister.
Additional blisters may develop.
Other symptoms may include:
Swollen lymph nodes close to the area of the blister.
Fever
Headac
he
A general feeling of discomfort.
No confirmed cases of gastrointestinal anthrax have been reported in the United States. This form of anthrax occurs after eating meat contaminated with the bacteria that cause anthrax. Gastrointestinal anthrax can be more serious than cutaneous anthrax but can be treated effectively with prompt use of antibiotics. But if untreated, gastrointestinal anthrax causes:
Ulcers at the base of the tongue or tonsils
Sore throat
Loss of appetite.
Vomiting
Fever
Well done researching Anthrax. Again, put your sources (ie, the URL`s if they are Internet resources). Off to a good start with your wiki page. Please upload all your homework here, eg the Malaria One World practice task too. Thanks, Mrs S
